Nintendo revealed the completely unexpected New Nintendo 2DS XL last night,Candy Apples Archives a slick hand-held console that takes the size, shape, and hardware power of the New 3DS XL and puts it in a reduced-cost system with everything in tact but the 3D -- and honestly, who needs the 3D?
The New Nintendo 2DS XL is coming July 28 for $150 -- $50 cheaper than the New 3DS XL but quite a bit pricier than the original $80 2DS.

The most noticeable difference between the 2DS and the New 2DS XL is its new foldable clamshell design that looks more like 3DS systems compared to the wedge-like design of the 2DS.
On top of that, the New 2DS XL is compatible with amiibos, can play New 3DS games (like Xenoblade Chronicles and Binding of Isaac Rebirth), has faster processing speeds, and a C-stick. Nintendo did not mention whether the New Nintendo 2DS XL will have access to the SNES virtual console, but that seems pretty likely.
As far as we know, the New 2DS XL is launching with only one color scheme: black and turquoise.
Nintendo's latest console, the Nintendo Switch, is a hybrid between a home and mobile console, although it comes at a comparatively steep price of $300. The Switch has been selling well, but Nintendo clearly isn't forgetting about its hand-held audience.
Along with yesterday's reveal, Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said in a statement that the New 2DS XL reveal shows Nintendo is still committed to the hand-held market.
Games are still being produced for Nintendo's handhelds too. Both Hey! Pikminand Miitopiaare launching on the same day as the New 2DS XL and more games are on their way.
