It's about time.
After a few years of everyone kinda knowing that a Google foldable was coming thanks to leaks and Watch Take Turns Tasting With College Alumni Onlinerumors, it's actually, finally, officially real. The Google Pixel Fold was shown off at I/O 2023 on Wednesday in all its mini-tablet-shaped glory. The Pixel Fold launches in June for $1800. It comes in two colors: porcelain and obsidian.
As expected, the Pixel Fold's easiest point of comparison is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Rather than go with a clamshell form factor, Google opted for a smaller outer display that unfolds into a larger 7.6-inch display. Like the other devices shown off at I/O, Pixel Fold will be powered by the Tensor G2 chip. Storage options are limited to 256GB and 512GB.
Of course, the Pixel Fold doesn't just fold for cosmetic reasons. You can multitask apps now, and when you aren't doing that, it looks like a lot of apps (such as Gmail) will support the larger inside display in various ways. Gmail, for example, will display your inbox on one side and whatever email you're reading on the other.
SEE ALSO: Google Pixel 7a announced at I/O 2023, and it's available nowOne major potential selling point of Pixel Fold is that includes all of Google's AI features as well as the software magic that makes photos look great. Google's mobile cameras have been arguably the best in the game for a while now, and now there's one on a foldable. As a bonus, you can set the Pixel Fold up on a flat surface and turn it into a static camera that can run on a timer.
We still won't know if the Pixel Fold is any good for a little while, but at least we finally know it's real.
Pixel Fold is available for pre-order starting today on Google's website.
