Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.
No further explanation was given for his decision, first reported by Variety.
Although the official announcement comes as a shocker, Day-Lewis has long had a reputation for being choosy about his projects, sometimes going years between movies. He's released just three films in the past decade: Lincoln, Nine, and There Will Be Blood.
Day-Lewis still has one final film to be released: Phantom Thread, from his There Will Be Blooddirector Paul Thomas Anderson, in which he plays a dressmaker in 1950s London. The project has already completed shooting and is currently scheduled for release December 25.
That release date should be a tipoff that Focus Features was already hoping Phantom Threadwould be an awards contender. Its chances are only bound to get stronger now that we know for sure it's Day-Lewis' last performance.
